USP students and employees have the opportunity to apply for an internship at the IBM Almaden Research Center, one of the world’s leading industrial research centers.  In order to apply, the following requirements must be met: 

•        an IBM research area, together with the principle IBM researchers involved, should be identified from the IBM website.  Research publications in refereed journals of the identified researchers in the area of interest should be cited.  A brief proposal (ca. 500words)  outlining the intended scope of work/study should be written.

•        a letter of recommendation from a researcher @ USP who is familiar with the applicant must accompany the application,  stating the applicant’s qualifications and demonstrated ability to perform as a self-motivated, independent scientist.

After these two requirements are met, submit the information from the requirements on the USP-IBM internship application form.   State also the intended duration of the internship and identified source(s) of funding.  Keep in mind that the IBM Almaden Research Center is in the heart of Silicon Valley, a very high cost-of-living area.    Rents and transportation costs are high.   A minimum stay of 6 months is expected.

We will then make a best effort to put you in contact with your identified researcher, or a researcher in a related field.   Once you have secured a commitment from that IBM Almaden Researcher to host your proposed internship, and agreed with them about dates and topic, you will be able to proceed with securing the appropriate visa and funding.
